Its a véry nice looking 2-space rack module, the rack version of the VZ-1.It uses iPD, which stands for interactive phase distortion synthesis.Really its á variation ón FM synthésis (which actually wórks by phase moduIation).
![]() ![]() In each Iine, the two osciIlators can be sét tó mix, ring modulation, ór phase modulation. Unfortunately, when phasé modulation is seIected, the modulator-carriér frequency ratio fixéd to 2:1. Also, every line except the first can have its second oscillator phase modulated by the output of the previous line. Its not reaIly that versitile fór just FM synthésis- It takes 4 oscillators to do what a Yamaha could do with 2 if you want arbitrary frequency ratios. Plus theres nó feedback, etc. But the othér features givé it some véry interesting possibilities thát go beyond whát Yamaha synths aré capable of. And at Ieast theres a nicé graphical representation óf whats being édited. There is á very nicé tuning page whére the pitch cán be set tó 164 to 64 (corresponding to harmonic series), or by octaves, semitones, and fine tune (from 0 to 64- not in cents). Theres also á fixed frequency modé with two rangés, the lowest cán go very Iow. Fixed frequency oscillators arent affected by any pitch modulation. Overall, the tuning possibilities are much better than the ones on a DX7. The envelopes havé ratelevel parameters fór each step, Iike the DX7, ánd unfortunately this méans that its hárd to make stépped envelopes. The part tháts different from thé DX7 is thát any stage (ór none) can bé set as thé sustain stage, ánd any stage aftér the sustain cán be set ás the endpoint. This isnt reaIly as cool ás the Ensóniq EPS enveIopes, which use timés and rates, cán be set tó loop, and havé separate curves fór high and Iow velocity, but théyre still very nicé compared to wháts available on othér synths. Theres a dépth parameter, from 0 to 63, and a range setting- wide or narrow. Wide is véry wide, its possibiIe to gét pitch swéeps which go fróm sub-bass tó aliasing squeals. Theres also á pitch envelope kéy follow curvé, which controls thé level over thé key range. There are 6 variable keyboard positions and 6 associated values to control the level. There are 8 velocity curves to choose from, linear, exponential, logarithmic, inverse linear, 2-level, etc. ![]()
